Who we are and what we stand for

A lot has changed since the founding years in the 19th century - including EMCH Aufzüge AG. But the basic values of the company have remained the same since great-grandfather Hans: Inventive spirit, quality, commitment, responsibility, and loyalty. When in 2003 the time came for our father to take a step back, we never step down, we did not hesitate for a second to take over the responsibility for the company and its employees. A task that has filled us both with great pride and joy ever since.

Bernhard und Hansjürg 69
«The special is commonplace with us because we have specialized in lift systems with extraordinary requirements specialized.»
«At EMCH they have an open ear for the concerns of architects. Does that perhaps have something to do with the fact that the Emch crew includes people who are architects themselves? They understand that, especially with conversions and listed buildings, the shaft geometries are often mandatory and almost always extremely tight. And yet with clever ideas EMCH has always succeeded in getting the best solutions and, incidentally, in building beautiful lifts. I have never heard the word 'impossible' in this context.» Elisabeth Boesch, Martin & Elisabeth Boesch Architects ETH SIA BSA, Zurich
«The fully glazed lift in the Alcohol Board in Bern, stressed exclusively on tension, demonstrated the exceptional innovative power of EMCH's engineers in 1995. Technical mastery and craftsmanship combine to create a timeless aesthetic force. When it came to sketching a connection between the Kirchenfeld Bridge and the Schwellenmätteli, the Bernese company, highly regarded among architects, invented an arched lift - unfortunately not executed - that followed the semicircular arches of the bridge. Futuristic and breathtaking, way ahead of its time.» Rolf Mühlethaler, Architect BSA SIA, Berne
«I am fascinated by the way EMCH works. Even during the first meetings, the people involved take ownership oft he project and do everything they can to realise their counterpart's ideas and conceptions. There is no no-go at EMCH; the focus is always on finding the best solution together. Nothing has changed in this respect during my professional life - for a good 25 years now, I have benefited from the enthusiasm, professionalism and smooth processes in my collaboration with EMCH.» Martin Gsteiger, Dipl. Archtect HTL SIA,3B Architekten AG, Bern
«EMCH suits me. Like me, the experts are interested in developing a specific, original solution for each project and not simply copying earlier designs. For EMCH and me, every lift is unique. This openness to new things, this joy in innovation and this willingness to try things out are what convince me. Together, we create products that meet the technical requirements of a building and are in harmony with my architectural language." Tilla Theus, architect ETH/SIA/BSA, Zurich
«From the Amtshaus Bern to the Swisscom Business Park in Ittigen - two generations of glass lifts: In 1980, our office developed the prototype of the very first glass lift in Switzerland with EMCH for the Amtshaus Bern, at the striking structural interface between the old and new buildings. There glass lift set a significant sign for the vertical connection in the complex and made it easier for visitors to find their way around the building. We were able to continue this successful cooperation with EMCH in all its facets for 32 years - a whole generation - later with Bernhard Emch for the glass lifts in the Swisscom Businesspark Ittigen. Here, too, it was a question of giving an appropriate expression to the vertical connection in the central atrium of the building and turning the ride in the lift into a small experience. This renewed collaboration has led to a great architectural and aesthetically mature result down to the last detail. We are looking forward to further collaboration, perhaps with the next generation.» Peter Breil, Atelier 5 Architects and Planners, Bern
«As an innovative architect, I depend on competent specialists. The cooperation with EMCH is always excellent. New, unconventional ideas are taken up and constructively developed and implemented with great expertise. EMCH is an important project partner for me, both in project planning and in realisation.» Andreas Ramseier, Ramseier & Associates Ltd, Zurich
«Installing a lift is like a challenging puzzle. Once, in Oetwil am See near Zurich, my job was to install a round glass lift. I was given a box of material. The site manager asked me what it was. "That's the lift." He didn't believe it, but I began to assemble the whole thing step by step. He was amazed.» Fritz Wittwer (fitter since 1989)

Sustainability

We see sustainability as a win-win-win situation. The environment, society and we as a company benefit from it. Our ISO 14001 certification requires us to have an operational environmental policy with defined environmental goals and a set annual environmental programme. As a founding member of the Berne Business Climate Platform, our sustainability projects and goals are transparently visible. On the supply side, we promote

  • Lift modernisations instead of replacements
  • We are a technology partner of the Federal Government in the ProEleva support programme for the energy-efficient refurbishment of old lifts.
  • Energy efficiency of lifts with energy label

Nachhaltigkeit
Social Responsibility

Social Responsibility

Practiced social competence as a key factor. Compared to other companies, EMCH is growing slowly but steadily: moderately, continuously, and sustainably. Every innovation takes time because we want to build on what has been tried and tested. Despite continuous growth, the family business wants to preserve its traditional culture, and it consciously takes care of its long-standing and experienced employees. Relations with social partners such as the Employers' Association of the Bern Region (VAB) and the Trade Union for Industry, and Services (Smuv, as of Unia trade union as of 2005) are actively cultivated.

Engagement

Respect, trust, appreciation, fairness, and open communication. Since the company was founded, employee commitment has been upheld - staff welfare foundation, apprenticeship training, employee events - and the SME is actively committed to a social economy. Bernhard Emch made his mark as longstanding president of the Berne Section of the Association of Trade and Industry, Bernhard Emch section, has campaigned for companies to give the long-term unemployed a chance again. And founded Jobtimal, a project to reintegrate a long-term project for the professional reintegration of long-term unemployed recipients of social assistance. The pilot projects carried out since 2015 clearly show how the reintegration attempts have improved the employability and health stability of those affected. At the same time, the project helps to reduce poverty and thus relieves the thereby relieving the burden on social welfare and the healthcare system.

History

In 1970, Jürg Emch installs the one-thousandth elevators for his company and starts a new era. The move to Bern Bümpliz marks the beginning of a new era for the company. Production is now carried out under much more favorable conditions and with completely renewed machinery. In the years following the takeover of the company, the Emch brothers Hansjürg and Bernhard of the company - despite the economic downturn and the economic crisis in Switzerland - a sustained positive development of the family business. Thus the basis to build up sufficient equity to be able to make important investments to make the company competitive for the future.
