Project: | Chauderon Bridge in Lausanne |
Architect: | Atelier Cube SA |
Lift type: | Rope-mechanical passenger lift |
EMCH Ascenseurs was able to renovate a landmark infrastructure. The restored lifts link the metro station and the bridge using new cabins. Their original character has been preserved. In 1992, two steel lift towers were erected at the ‘Vigie’ station on the Lausanne metro. They were designed to carry passengers from the railway platform to the footbridge leading to the Chauderon bridge. The latter was protected as a historic monument in the canton of Vaud. The characteristic lift infrastructure therefore had to meet exacting formal requirements, especially as it occupies a prominent position in the urban space. The architects at Atelier Cube designed a characteristic technical installation, with beautiful details such as the two pulleys that crown the towers like crowns. Passengers were transported up or down in a metal cabin - come rain or shine. The running costs of such an installation were naturally higher than those of indoor lifts. The construction was more heavily used and its components had to be replaced more often. However, the project manager decided that the installation should be retained, and entrusted EMCH with the refurbishment work because of its experience with outdoor lifts. Particularly exposed parts, such as the cabins, were replaced. More transparent, they are now equipped with more sophisticated surveillance tools, which should prevent vandals from breaking in and limit attacks. This robust construction is protected from the elements. Finally, all the electrical installations have also been replaced. All the work had to obey one golden rule: to preserve the original character of these unusual lifts. Builder: Transport Publics de la région lausannoise
