Basel SBB station combines the existing building fabric with contemporary architecture. The two lift installations in the new footbridge are functionally integrated into the station’s circulation system while also forming part of the overall architectural concept.

In collaboration with Gähler und Partner AG, SBB and EMCH Aufzüge AG, two lift installations with different designs were realised. One lift, with entrances arranged at right angles, is integrated into a solid concrete shaft and blends discreetly into the existing structure. The second is designed as a transparent glass-and-metal structure, creating a deliberate contrast in both construction and architectural expression.

Both lifts provide step-free access and improve accessibility throughout the station. The different material choices demonstrate how lift technology can be integrated into existing infrastructure in response to specific architectural and functional requirements.
